Amethyst is the Birthstone
for February
"As one enamoured is upborne in dream
O'er lily-paven lakes mid silver mist
To wondrous music, so this shape might seem
Partly to tread the waves with feet which kist
The dancing foam, partly to glide along
The airs that roughened the moist amethyst"
... Percy Bysshe Shelley

History and Folklore of the Amethyst
The amethyst is February’s birthstone. The amethyst is a most excellent gift for the 4th, 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries. Its name has early roots in Middle English (amatiste), early French (amatiste), Latin (amethystus), and from the Greek amethystos, meaning to prevent intoxication & instill a stable or serious mind. The sixteenth century poet, Remy Belleau, recounted the story of Bacchus pursuing the maiden Amethyste. She offered a prayer which the goddess Diana answered in an instant, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethyste's desire to remain chaste, Bacchus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple. In the Greco-Roman empire, special goblets were fashioned of amethyst to diminish sorrow and evil.
In the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, the amethyst enhances the giving and receiving of material wealth, or what is known as the 'wealth corner'. According to feng shui, this precious stone absorbs and repeals low, negative, stale energy, while transmuting it into a more peaceful, powerful, lighter energy. The various aspects of one's life may be personally or professionally enhanced with strategic placement of the amethyst in your home or business. Ancient Chinese medicine prescribed ground amethyst to alleviate stomach disorders and bad dreams.
Ancient Egyptians used the stone to represent their zodiac sign of the goat, and wore it to guard against guilt and fearfulness. One of the twelve stones on the breastplate of the high priest Aaron, the amethyst later has stood for the tribe of Dan, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The twelfth foundation of the Holy City is said to be built of amethyst. In the Middle Ages, this gemstone was a symbol of piety and celibacy; during the Renaissance, it stood for humility and modesty; while in Renaissance magic, an amethyst engraved with a bear's image was worn for protection. The amethyst has also adorned royalty the world over. It was a favored by Queen Catherine the Great of Russia and decorated the British crown jewels.
