About Steve Dixon
I have been designing and creating jewelry in my own studio for over 20 years. Both the inspiration and execution of my ideas have become refined and integrated into what feels like a very natural and organic process. Certain common themes continue to interest me; architectural forms, the relationships of masses to the surrounding space, both on the body and off, the distillation of forms to their essential elements, and the emotional content and meaning of those forms. These concerns are expressed in my jewelry, which is often understated, refined, and elegant. The jewelry is executed in 18k colored golds and platinum in a variety of finishes.
In much of my current work, I utilize the miniature lathe to execute complex forms, which are then modified or embellished with gemstones. My recent ring series, “Contemporary Ruins”, is inspired by memories of visits to historical sites in Europe during my adolescence. The most compelling images, which are still with me, are those of sites, which were not renovated and still possessed a sense of mystery and timelessness. It is this visceral connection to the past and present which interests me and which I hope to communicate in this group of work. My background in architecture, as well as travels to Europe and Central America, continue to be a source of inspiration and pleasure in my life and work.
My work utilizes many jewelry-making processes. Lost wax casting is combined with fabrication to create the Sequentials Series, offering interchangeable modular rings, with design choices of scale, color and precious gems. The studio also produces wedding bands and diamond mountings, and pendants and earrings with a variety of colored gemstones. Custom work is available upon request.
